In Jonas's community there are many rules that the citizens must follow. Using only the first two chapters of The Giver. If you don't have access to a book, then you can read the chapters here
P:\etexts\Novels\The Giver
Go to My Computer, P:\Drive, click on the "etexts" folder, click on the "Novels" folder and Click on "The Giver".
- List at least five rules that Jonas and his community must live by and give them your own title or name.
- Copy an exact quote from the first two chapters of The Giver for each rule in your list which shows where the author has mentioned it. Include the page number for the quote.
- Explain in one or two complete sentences what the rule means in your own words (Don't tell why you like it/don't like it).
- Tell what the advantages of each rule could be in a community. How could this rule benefit your life or world?
Here are some rules that Jonas community follow; No pilot flies over ANY community, you must use the proper verb, you must listen to the speakers, you cannot keep your feelings inside, you cannot choose your own job. Here are some exact quotes that introduce these rules; listen to speakers 2; then all the citizens were ordered to enter the nearest building, use proper verb 3; “that’s it Asher you are released!” Then Jonas was pulled inside for a brief talk, no pilot over community 1; a fighter jet flew over head so close then the speaker said he was released, you can’t keep feelings inside 9 ; Jonas wanted to keep his feeling inside but of course that was a rule, you can’t choose your job 12; “the community knew I liked nurturing by the way I spent time with the little children, so on December I got the job of nurturing. No pilot can fly over any city, you have to use appropriate words, you must listen to the radios, you can’t lie, you can’t control if your boss chooses you. 1 so the plain doesn’t crash in the middle of the community, 2 so that you never fail on a test, 3 so you know what to do, 4 so people can help you, 5 so you don’t have to take a job interview. ReplyDelete1. Five rules of Jonas community is: Children are not allowed bikes until they are nine years old, listen to whatever the speaker says, married couples can only have one boy and one girl, if you are a pilot you can’t fly over the community, you have to share your feelings in the evening.
ReplyDelete2. The first rule I wrote is: was one of the few rules that was not taken very seriously and was almost always broken. The children all received their bicycles at nine; they were not allowed to ride bicycles before then. I found this info on pg 13. The second rule I wrote is: Then all of the citizens had been ordered to go into the nearest building and stay there. IMMEDIATELY, the rasping voice through the speakers had said. I found this info on pg 2. The third rule I wrote is: Two children -- one male, one female -- to each fam¬ily unit. It was written very clearly in the rules. I found this info on pg 8. The forth rule I wrote is: He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community. I found this info on pg 1. The last rule I wrote is: This evening he almost would have pre¬ferred to keep his feelings hidden. But it was, of course, against the rules. I found info this on pg 9.
3. I think the first rule I wrote is unfair, children should be able to learn to ride bikes when they are young. The second rule I wrote is good, cause if there was a emergency the speaker would speak telling them what to do. The third rule I wrote is ok, but what if the married couple want more children. The fourth rule I wrote is fair, because the planes and paraphernalia flies onto of the community I might scare people. The last rule I wrote is ok, your family can help you with your problems!
4. The fist rule can benefit our world, cause then the children would be more mature to be careful. The second rule I wrote can benefit the world because then they would not be a crisis around the world. The third rule does not benefit the world because children are the future and we need lots of future. The fourth rule I wrote would benefit the world because then we won’t need more planes and then the environment will be helped. The last rule I wrote would be good because there would be no secrets, and lies.

You have written a great deal, Rosie, with lots of detail. Why do you think that the elders of the community might want all family units to share their feelings aloud?

ReplyDeleteFive rules that Jonas community must live by are you must tell your family your feelings after dinner and I call that the feeling teller, if you are a pilot you cannot fly your plane over the community and I call that the plane boundary, you must have two kids a boy and a girl and I call that the family rule, if you break a law three times you are released and I call that the rule breaker and if you say ‘you are released’ to someone you will be in big trouble and I call that the release rule.
ReplyDeleteQuotes for my rules are for the first one on my list on page 4 ‘who wants to be the first tonight, for feelings.’ For the second one on my list on page 1 is it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community. For the third one on page 8 it is two children-one male, one female- to each family unit. For my fourth rule it on page 9 the rules say that if there is a third transgression, he simply has to be released. And for my last rule on page 3 that’s it, Asher! You’re released.
My rule that I picked was telling your family your feelings after dinner and it means to me that everyone should know how you feel because then they can help you.
The advantages for my rules are for the first one it will help people help you and I like it because I think it will help people feel more welcome and that’s how it will benefit the real world. For the second one it will give people advantages because not have a really loud noise over their head and it would benefit the real world by extremely hurting somebody’s ears and I like it because it will not hurt my ears. For the third one the advantages are it will help people by not get their family too big and it will help the real world by because the world will not over populated. For the forth one the advantages are that it will not make as many people break the law like it because then it will make our community safer. And for the last on it will give advantages by people not saying mean things because they will get in big trouble not just little trouble and it will benefit the real world by people not getting mad at each other.

Here is 5 rules Jonas and his community must follow, no aircrafts are allowed to fly over the community, they are appointed a certain job, they have to share their feelings at dinner time, they have special ceremonies for a new age all the way up to 12 and they stop counting age after 12. This is a quote from page 1, he’d never seen an aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for pilots to fly over the community. The rule in my own words for the aircraft rule is it is illegal for a pilot to fly a jet, a plane or any sort of aircraft over the community. The advantages for the rules are if an aircraft is flying over the community it can distract you. When they are appointed jobs to them they could have the job they wanted most. Sharing their feelings at dinner time would be good because they could tell their parents what’s on their mind. Having ceremonies is good because they get taken away things and get new things. When they stop counting your age is pretty stupid because they don’t even celebrate it. When they stop counting your age I would be so upset because I wouldn’t be able to have birthday parties with my friends. Nathan
