In Jonas' new work package, one piece of paper outlined the 8 rules he had to live by. Rule#8 stated "You may lie."
Why does Jonas find the instruction about lying so disturbing? 3 Sentences minimum. (What would you feel/think if you were given this "permission"?)

Jonas finds lying disturbing because he has never lied before in his whole life until he was able to.
When he passed rank 12 he thought if he could lie so maybe he could ask his parents if they were able to lie. But if they could lie they won’t tell Jonas the truth.

ReplyDeleteI think Jonas finds rule number eight disturbing because he has been taught not to lie from day one. He is afraid that other people can lie once they are 12 and have an assigned job. If I was able to lie I would only do it if I had too. By Jason
I think that Jonas is disturbed by his last rule because he has never lied.
ReplyDeleteIf I was given this permission I would feel exactly the same. I would feel that because it would be a huge difference in my life.

Jonas finds lying disturbing because he wasn’t allowed to lie. But when he lies he probably would feel like he was breaking a rule even though he isn’t. Jonas probably felt weird. I would to. I would wonder if everybody gets to lie once they turn 12.

ReplyDeleteI think that Jonas is disturbing with rule #8 because he never lies. If I was Jonas I still would not lie. Jonas still can lie if he wants to because no one can’t boss him around. Sarah S.
1. In Jonas’s community you are not allowed to lie. So I think Jonas finds the instruction about lying so disturbing because it was new to him and nobody in the community that HE had known had never lied before. Or maybe he was confused in a way or scared. Well if I lived in a community like the one Jonas lives in I would feel different and think why would they let me lie. By Ireland.

ReplyDeleteI think lying so disturbing because he has never lied in his life. Disturbing of lying because has friends even got lie and the other 12 can lie. Disturbing of lying because he might be thinking that has parents can lie and his parents lie to him.

1) I think that Jonas finds rule #8 very disturbing because from day one he has been taught to never lie. He wants to ask his parents if they love him and his parents do not use the word “Love”. Jonas has never wanted to lie but he is allowed to now that he is a 12. If I had the permission to lie I would try to never use it until I absolutely needed to. By Trinity.
ReplyDeleteJonas found the instruction on lying so disturbing because in his community there are very strict rules on grammar and speech and that there isn’t any room for mistakes on what to say and what not to say. I think I would feel just like Jonas does if I were given instructions saying that I am allowed to lie, I would feel disturbed and kind of confused. I think in some cases being allowed to lie might be useful, but even then I do not think I would lie because some instructions tell me I can.

ReplyDeleteJonas finds the rule “You may lie “disturbing because he grew up without lying. My opinion says that that’s o.k. I personally think that because I already lie but being allowed to that’s a whole different story. I feel that I would be fine with that rule. But for other people maybe not. Smiles! :)

ReplyDeleteJonas finds the rule disturbing because no one in his community is allowed to lie ever!!!!! If I was Jonas I would feel spooked and I would want to know why I was allowed to lie. Logan>A

ReplyDeleteI think Jonas finds rule#8 you may lie disturbing because in his community nobody is allowed to lie except the receiver and the giver. Plus he was never allowed to lie since he was born. Plus he thought if he did it would ruin some of his friendships.
If I was given permission to lie I would think never to do it unless I had to.

ReplyDeleteI think Jonas found the lying rule so disturbing because in his community nobody is allowed to lie only the giver and the receiver. And he was never allowed to lie from the day he was born. One time he said he was starving and got pulled over by his teacher and his teacher said nobody has ever been starving in this community and never will. If I was in Jonas position it would take me a while to adjust to the rule but once I did get used to the rule I would still not lie. Amelia
Jonas finds the instruction disturbing because he has never had permission to lye before so it is a big change in his life. And the biggest change would also be being around other people that were not allowed to and I think that would be disturbing for him. And I would think of this permission as a good thing because then you could lye when you were about to be in trouble.

Jonas finds the rule you may lie disturbing because in his community if you lie it is kind of like doing a crime which leads to being released and then he wonders if everyone has this Instructions to lie which leads him to wonder if his parents do but still he doesn’t ask his parents any questions about it. And if I was in Jonas situation I would lie depending on what I would have to lie about. Aaron
ReplyDeleteI think that Jonas found rule #8 disturbing because no one else in his community was allowed to lie but the giver and the receiver. I would feel uncomfortable. If I got this permission, I don’t think that I would want to lie, even if I was aloud. ~Katie~
ReplyDeleteJonas finds the instruction #8 disturbing because he was raised and taught not to lie. His parents never taught him to lie and in his instructions it said he could lie. He thought if all of the 12 had the instructions that they could lie. He wanted to ask his parents if it said that they could lie in their instructions. They could lie to him about being able to lie. I feel if I was given this permission I probably wouldn’t lie but it depends on the scenario. I would only lie if I really had to. Sarah C.
ReplyDeleteI think Jonas is disturbed by his instruction that said he can lie because his whole life he has been told he can’t lie and that lying isn’t good but now he has been told he can lie. It is weird for him because if a question comes up he doesn’t have to tell the truth. I would feel nervous. If I could lie I would only lie if I really had to. Jonas might think it is disturbing to lie to his parents and friends.

Maybe Jonas feels bad about lying because he’s never done it before. And it’s always been against the rules to him. He might just not like lying. Nolen
ReplyDeleteJonas finds the instruction about lying disturbing by secrets going around. He would want to know the truth because people want to know the truth and lying is not a nice thing to do. If I were given permission to lie I would usually not because lying is a very mean thing to do and people would start to talk about me behind my back. Nathan
ReplyDeleteThe giver; rule #8. You may lie.
ReplyDeleteJonas finds the instruction about lying so disturbing, because he thinks that maybe his parents got that rule to and when he asked if his dad lies sometimes maybe his dad is lying too.

ReplyDeleteJonas finds this instruction so disturbing because he has never followed this rule before. He feels discomfort with lying to people, especially to his own family. Eventually Jonas decides to lie to The Giver (if The Giver asks Jonas if he has ever tried to give a memory or actually given away a memory to someone). For some reason, Jonas does not want The Giver to know that he has given a memory to a baby named Gabrielle who has trouble sleeping. I think that Gabrielle might be the next receiver to be chosen. In Jonas’s instructions, he was told NOT to share his training with anyone. Now, in a way, he has kind of just done what he was told not to do. If I was given this “permission”, and I was in Jonas’s spot, I would feel kind of awkward and nervous. I would feel nervous because I could accidentally give away a memory, or change the world forever. I would feel awkward because no one else is given permission to lie. In my opinion, lying could be useful in some cases, but also it could get you in trouble if you used it in the wrong place.

Jonas feels bad about lying because he’s never done it before. It’s always been a rule for him never to lie. It might be none of his friends have done it.
