How Does It End? Your Opinion...

Re-read pp 174 to 179 on etext The Giver or, if you have a book, read pages 177-180.

The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.

Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.

Or perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.  Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.

Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
  1. Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your idea of what happened from the last chapter.
  2. Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence.  Give the page number of the quote.
  3. What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
  4. What are some memories (plural) that you have you would give to someone you care about?
Do this is MS WORD.  Use WORD TALK to proof read your answer BEFORE you post it.

  1. I think Jonas lived because even Gabrielle was there Jonas said he could feel Gabrielle in his arms. He and Gabrielle saw the sled and they had a real cold feeling when they were on the sled. Quote; for the first time he heard singing and then he saw lights…p.179-180. I think that the giver and the community will experience love and change their ways and Jonas and Gabrielle will live happily and return to the community when they are older /elder. The memory I would give away to someone I care about is when I swam with dolphins and when I snow boarded for the first time.

  2. I believe that Jonas and Gabriel died because when he finally got to the top of the hill the lots of the memories flashed before his eyes, and also at the end on page number 180 he thought he heard something to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo, and for my last one he gave all of his memories to Gabriel so he had no memories of strength left with no one that could help him. The giver will have to help all of the people in the community because Jonas and Gabriel died thought. The community will get all of the memories and will go crazy with all of the pain but I think will be happy with the pleasant memories. And Jonas and Gabriel will be lying there because I thought they died. And I would like to give away some pleasant memories because I think they should experience what I did that was fun like parts of my vacation to Disney land and parts of my vacation to Mexico.

  3. The Giver: The End?
I personally think Jonas and Gabe died because of three reasons.
    1. Jonas and Gabe were out in the wild all alone all they saw were animals if anybody was even close to them they would have found footprints and other evidence of humans.
    2. Jonas’s life flashed before his eyes which people claim happens when you are dying.
    3. Jonas saw lights another thing that people claim happens when you die.
These three pieces of evidence have led me to believe that Jonas and Gabe did not survive.
    Question 2
“All at once he could see lights” Page 179
    Question 3
The Giver will help the community with the memories. The community will change their way of lifestyle. Jonas and Gabe will be dead.
    Question 4
The memories I would give are colours, animals, snow, sun, moon, joy and family. Logan.A

  4. This is question one and two. I think that Jonas dies because people say that when you die you think about your memories and Christmas and sleighing was his only memories left. My evidence is “He settled himself on the sled and hugged Gabe close. The hill was steep but the snow was powdery and soft, and he knew this time there will be no ice, no fall, no pain.” This was on pg 179. He knew because he did this in a memory. And to prove that he hallucinated about the twinkling lights, Christmas trees and singing “ He knew they were shining through the windows of the rooms, they were red, blue and yellow lights that twinkled in trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.” This also on pg 179.

Think the community will need the memories because that means they also have wisdom, memories, real feelings and colours. I think the Giver will help calm down the people in the community, then when it is done he would want to release himself because in the book he said “When this is all over I will join my daughter” He said something like that. I think Jonas and Gabriel died because they were getting hypothermia.

If I could give memories I would give memories of the all the holidays I’ve had have some Christmas memories.

  5. Memories

    1. I think what happened was that Jonas after he saw the light that flashed before his eyes seeing all the people he loved his family, his friends that he grew up with, and the giver.
As he was about to die the echo he heard was just the music fading away in his ears.
He saw in his mind the family that the giver gave to him about all the family the awkward look boxes that were bright with ribbons on the top of them.
When people are about to die they see their life flash before their eyes, or they see a bright light and it keeps fading away into the darkness right before the person dies.
2 .the quote from the book says, “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
    3. The thing that happened to the giver was that he was going to stay behind and not find “elsewhere”.

What will happen to the community to the community was that when Jonas left he left almost all the memories from the giver gave to him went to the community so that the community knows all about war and pain.
What will happen to Gabriel and Jonas is that they may have lived they may have died.
    4. The memory I would give to someone I cared about an they didn’t know anything about it would probably be the memories I loved the most, like swaying gently in a hammock on a sunny day with a smoothie with a little umbrella in it, going tubing with my friends bouncing on the waves, celebrating Christmas or some other holiday with my family opening presents playing with the toys that you just got and eating fruit caked, and my most favorite spending time with my family.

  6. I think that he died because when people dye they see their whole life flash before them example: “He began to recall happy times. He remembered his parents and his sister. He remembered his friends, Asher and Fiona. He They also sometimes see bright dots. “He knew they were shinning through the windows of the room, that they were the red’ blue and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrating love. I also think that he died because he hadn’t had food for a long time. “ Now that they had left the cultivated fields behind them, it was almost impossible to find food.”
I think that the giver will be sad to hear Jonas is missing and that he gave them memories while Gabe and Jonas where in the cold and gave them warm memories. The community will probably be thankful that they have the memories so that they know what really happened in the past. I think that Gabe and Jonas will be dreaming that they are at the Christmas party and feel love. I would give memories about Hawaii and Disney land and snow.

  7. 1. I think Jonas passed away. I think this because one, when you pass away some people say you see a bright light or that your life pops up in front of you. Two, because he was hearing, seeing and feeling his greatest and favourite memory. Three, because Jonas never gave up and he maybe reached his destination and I think that everyone reaches their destination before they die. There is one thing I do not know the answer to. What happened to Gabriel?
    2. Quote: Pg 180 “ Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too, but perhaps it was only an echo.”
    3. I think what will happen to The Giver is that he might be happy but sad because he won’t know if his friend Jonas made it or not and he will not know why he left early. I think the community will change and everyone will see colour, know what animals are and they will put a stop to release. Well for Jonas and Gabriel I think Jonas passes away I don’t know what happens to Gabe. There is a creative answer or a dull answer. The dull answer is that he passed away, the creative answer is he survives and when he is older reaches somewhere else ( a different community ).
    4. Some memories I would give to someone I cared about would be:
    1. The memory of love and feelings
    2. The memory of Christmas
    3. The memory of the sled
    4. The memory of parents having parents
    5. The memory of animals
    6. The memory of war

  8. I think that Jonas and Gabe both made it and got warmed up inside and here’s some evidence how they survived. Page 178 “I remember this place Gabe.” Page 179 “Downward, downward, faster and faster.” Page 179-180 “Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy below, ahead, they would be waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby.” Here is another quote from the book part of my evidence “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too.” The Giver will try to release because his daughter asked for release and got it so the Giver will kill himself to go live with Rosemarie. The community will be terrified and go into chaos and as for Jonas and Gabe they will stay with that family. If there was no love in the community I would give a love memory to my whole family and I would also give another memory of the sled injury memory to my family. Nathan

  9. I think Jonas died but Gabe didn’t. My evidence is that on page 179 he said “He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now”. Another piece of evidence is on page 180 “Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo”. My last piece of evidence is that Jonas was lying down on the snow with Gabe shivering. I think that was the start of hypothermia and then when he was at the bottom of the hill after going on the sleigh he died of hypothermia. I think the community will get the memories and not know what to do with them but the giver will calm them down. I also think that after the giver calms the community down he will die. I would give the people I care about memories of when I met Christine Sinclair for the first time and also when I met Kaylyn Kyle, Emily Zurrer, and Karina LeBlanc. I would also give the good memory of our trip to Disneyworld and Disneyland.

  10. I think that Jonas and Gabe didn’t die because I thought that they were leaving the past and into the future. Here is my evidence from the book: #1 but he began to suddenly feel happy. He began to recall happy times. He remembered his parents and his sister. He remembered his friends Asher and Fiona. He remembered the giver. Memories of joy flooded through him suddenly. #2 He hugged Gabriel and rubbed him briskly, warming him, to keep him alive. The wind was bitterly cold. The snow swirled, blinding his vision. But somewhere ahead, through the blinding storm, he knew there was warmth and light. #3 for the first time, he heard something that was known to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across the vast distances of space and time, from the place he left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. – pages 174-180. My quote from the book is this: Behind him, across the vast distances of space and time, from the place he left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. This is what I think will happen: the community and the giver will change their life because Jonas and Gabe will not be there. The memories I would give would be weather, family, friends, food, toys and all holidays. ~*Katie*~

  11. I think that Jonas did not die because he might have seen his Christmas memory and he thought he was dead. He pressed his hands into Gabriel’s back and tried to remember sunshine. P.g.176. Jonas might have thought that Gabe was dead too and it might have been real. He hugged Gabriel and rubbed him briskly, warming him, to keep him alive. Pg179. I think the giver will worry about Jonas and go after him and found Jonas and Gabe and the community will run wild and Jonas and the Giver will come back to their community and Jonas and Gabe will be brothers. For a moment he thought how easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slide into the softness of snow, the darkness of night, the nice comfort of sleep. Pg176. I will give loving memories to people I love like Christmas memories and birthday memories. Sarah S.

  12. How does it End
    I think Jonas dies because:
    • Page 179 and 180
“Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.
Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.”

    • Because he is freezing Page 178 “But the memory faded, leaving him colder than before. If only he had had time to receive more warmth from The Giver before he escaped! Maybe there would be more left for him now. But there was no purpose in if-only. His entire concentration now had to be on moving his feet, warming Gabriel and himself, and going forward.
He climbed, stopped, and warmed them both briefly again, with a tiny scrap of memory that seemed certainly to be all he had left.
The top of the hill seemed so far away, and he did not know what lay beyond. But there was nothing left to do but continue. He trudged upward.
As he approached the summit of the hill at last, some¬thing began to happen. He was not warmer; if anything, he felt more numb and more cold. He was not less ex¬hausted; on the contrary, his steps were leaden, and he could barely move his freezing, tired legs.
But he began, suddenly, to feel happy. He began to re¬call happy times. He remembered his parents and his sis¬ter. He remembered his friends, Asher and Fiona. He remembered The Giver.”
    • Because maybe his life flashed before his eyes
    They started down.
Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe. The runners sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line through an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.
He forced his eyes open as they went downward, down¬ward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where fam¬ilies created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.

  13. 1) I think that Jonas and Gabe will live because , #1 The runners sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line through an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past. P#179, #2 all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where fam¬ilies created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. (Christmas), #3 Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby.
    2) That answer is in Q#1.
    3) I think that the Giver will now live a happy life because now all the memories that Jonas and Gabe had will be transferred to the rest of the community, and the Giver will now be able to help the other people understand. The community will understand what The Giver, Jonas and other people can see and hear what they couldn’t and I think that Jonas and Gabe will live a happy life now that they can go into a warm place and live there.
    4) Some of the memories that I would give to someone that I love would be, memories of rainbows, love, holidays and feelings. By Trinity.
