Born To Run - Life is Full of Choices...

Becky made the choice to run away from Craig and her mother in order to "save" Brighteyes.  That decision made her make all sorts of other choices. She had to put up with all sorts of hardships, and, in the end, found herself in hospital and seriously injured.  She was lucky that Brighteyes was "adopted" by another, kind, person; it could have been far worse for both Becky and Brighteyes.

  • Describe all the choices Becky made that were unwise and potentially very dangerous to her own safety?
  • What other realistic and safer alternatives could Becky have chosen instead of running away to save Brighteyes?
  • How else could she have stopped Craig from having his dogs picked up by the grey Land Rover and "taken away"?

  1. Becky made a lot of bad choices for example she left her bag on a bench she didn’t go to a hospital when she started to bleed she yelled at Craig she left her phone at home. Becky could have called the police when she found out that Craig was doing animal cruelty. Becky could have tried to care for Craig and Craig might have let Alphie and Brighteyes stay, but never the less, Craig did do his part like steeling dogs e.t.c so still Craig should go to prison or jail.

    1. Who else could Becky have called that looks after animal welfare?

  2. There are only two unwise choices that I can think of and that was when she ran away from home and now she’s on the verge of dying and the other one was when she heard the gun shot and decided to follow it. She could have been seen and been shot from the guy who takes dogs and kills them. Becky could have said that she did not want to live with Craig to her mom and she might have listened or she could have slept in the kennel that Brighteyes until her and her mom moved away. Becky could have taken Alphie to walk with her and not run and maybe Alphie would have been fine.

  3. 1. Becky made the wrong choice to run away from home, she made the wrong choice to stay in patrolled area; she also made the wrong choice to leave her bag on the bench.
    2. A more realistic and safer choice than run away with bright eyes is to tell her mother that she wanted to keep bright eyes and tell her about what she saw in the field.
    3. Another way to stop Craig from “taking the dogs to the rescue centre” is to let them keep the good racers and actually send the other dogs to the rescue centre.

  4. The choices she made that where unwise are that she could have starved and died. She should have just told her mom and said that she was very mad and told Craig instead of running away. Also she could have just called her mom after she left so that she would not worry about her. She could also have had hypothermia and died and I would be unfair for bright eyes. I think she could hide bright eyes or make her mom make Craig not to give him away and if he does quickly rescue him. She could of hide all the dogs or contact the van and say they were not doing that anymore and Craig would not know that she phoned the company.

    1. How did Becky get to the city? Was that dangerous? Explain.

  5. The unwise choices that Becky made were to run away from her mother and Craig with little money and no food. She also didn’t have any shelter or warmth. Becky could have talked to her mom and maybe they could have left Craig with Brighteyes and get a nice small apartment for the two of them and Brighteyes. They also could have sat down together and had a really long talk with Craig to try to figure something out. One last solution that they could have done is that after Brighteyes is worn down and he is done his racing Becky could keep him instead of the Land Rover coming to get him and put him to sleep.

  6. All of the bad choices that Becky made that could make her in danger are running away from home which is a bad choice because you have to live on the streets, and another bad choice is hitchhiking into a city with a stranger, and not taking a lot of money which would be bad because you will not be able to buy food for long, and not listening to the lady in the café about calling home and going to a big city were most of the shelter is taken up.
Other choices that Becky could have made were accusing Craig of killing Alphy and then Becky’s mother would have probably broken up with Craig, and another one is she could have walked to the city instead of hitchhiking, and if she did run away to try to get a hold of some of Craig’s money, and she should have called home like what the lady at the café said and for the last one she should have went to a smaller community where there is more shelter.
I think Becky could have stopped the grey land rover from picking up the dogs by always staying at the place where the dogs were kept at all times.

    1. Well done, Chase, you are one of the few that has noticed how dangerous hitch-hiking is, especially for young children.

  7. Born to run: Choices

    • It was very dangerous for Becky to run away because bright eyes could maybe get stolen. It was also very dangerous for a 14 year old girl to be wandering the loud streets of London at night with a dog that is only a racing dog not a fighter. It was also an unsafe life because Becky needed food, water, and shelter and the reason why that is very dangerous is because she needed money to buy food, water and shelter. Becky also hitchhiked a car ride with a stranger she didn’t have any information about the driver.

    • Becky could have sued Craig for having such a bad business. Becky could have talked to her mum of what Craig does to dogs who don’t race well.

    • Becky could have told an animal control person so they could deal with Craig and the guy who drives the Grey Land Rover. She could tell her Mum and she would tell Craig to stop doing what he is doing or stop racing dogs for money and killing innocent dogs but instead send them to a real home.

  8. The choices Becky made that were very unwise were running away from home, and Becky hitchhiked with a person she did not know.
Other safer alternatives Becky could have chosen instead of running away to save Brighteyes were, going to the police in secret when Craig and her mom were away, and not hitchhiked with a stranger who she does not know. The driver could kidnap her and maybe even hurt her.

  9. The choices that Becky made were unsafe, unwise and very dangerous because she left a note that was a lie and her parents will be worried about Becky and call the police and she was hitch hiking and the man inside the truck could have killed her. Other realistic and safer alternatives that Becky could have saved bright eyes instead of running away from home is she could tell her mom what her step dad is doing and they can stop it or she can take a picture and show her mother. Becky could have stop Craig from getting the dogs took away by running in front of the truck and say, “where are you taking the dogs?”Sarah S.

  10. The dangerous choices that Becky has made are: she has ran away from home these are dangers she has run out of money, she ran out of food, she ran out of water. They don`t have any heat she has also hitchhiked with a total stranger to a big city. Instead of running away for home she could have got a new house and live on her own or she could have asked Craig to move out. Becky could have took Alphie to a vet. ~Amelia

  13. It was a bad idea running away from home and hitchhiking with a stranger for Becky and hiding behind a dumpster when Becky got bitten by the dog were know one could see her. Instead of running away she could of just took some time and think about it. She could of took the dogs so they could run freely. Alex

  14. One choice Becky made that was unsafe was running away without too much money and food. Another reason is that Becky hitchhiked into the city with someone she didn’t know.
A realistic choice that Becky should have done was to tell Craig that she saw what happens to the dogs when they get taken away. Another reason would be to tell her mother that she really wants to move.
She could have stopped Craig from getting the dogs “taken” by the grey Land Rover by asking Craig if she could see who Bright Eyes new owner would be. Another would be to ask the guy where the dogs would go.

  15. The choices that Becky made that where dangerous are: running away from home and its very dangerous to run away because your friends and family will not know where you are and they may not be able to find you and you can get lost. The other choice that Becky made that was not very wise was hitchhiking and hitchhiking is extremely dangerous because you don’t know the person that you are riding with and you don’t know if you can trust that person. And the last choice that Becky made was leaving her bag on the bench and not watching over her valuable items and not taking her phone. Becky could have told her mother and took a picture to show her. I think that Becky’s mom should have told Craig that he had to move out and find somewhere else to stay from then on. She could have stopped Craig from “taking away” the dogs by staying with the dogs the whole time.

  16. Born To Run Blog
The choices that were unwise and dangerous that Becky made were that she ran away from home, which was unwise and dangerous because she didn’t exactly have all of the paraphernalia that she needed. Becky left the warmth and should have been a little more prepared for the long nights ahead of her. Another dangerous and unwise choice that Becky made was she left her bag with all of the extra clothes she had packed unsupervised in the park, which is a risky move because they could get stolen and she would loose all of her possessions and items that she would need, to last her long journey. Also Becky did not give a fair warning to her mother about her leaving the house, which is a risky move because her Mum would probably (definitely) call the police and they would be looking for her. Becky should have told her Mum in a descriptive way that she was leaving, and might be back. Another thing was that Becky had gone through the “no trespassing” sign, which is a dangerous move because someone could be armed in that property. Maybe it was an army zone or something like that. She should have been smart and recognized that there was a NO trespassing sign for a reason. Asking for a ride with someone that she didn’t even know is an un-smart move for Becky to make because she doesn’t know the person. The person that she hitched a ride from could be armed in some way, or be a danger to her safety. Even though the person that you’re getting a ride from may look friendly, that doesn’t always mean that you should trust them. Becky should have listen to the women at the cafeteria and gone home. She made choices that were not so smart, and she willed herself to keep moving and put herself in danger for Brighteyes. Becky is very kind at heart, but she does take some risks, that personally, I would not choose to do. Some safer and more realistic alternatives that Becky could have chosen to do instead of running away with Brighteyes is that she could have stayed at home with her Mum, even though Craig is still there, and tried to keep Brighteyes away from Craig and other people that could be a danger to Brighteyes life. She could have taken Brighteyes to a location where there was a safe place to put Brighteyes, like for instance, a place that Craig wouldn’t know where Brighteyes was. Then she could make up a story that Brighteyes had disappeared, and there was no need to worry. Hopefully Craig would then believe her. Some other alternatives to stop the dogs from getting taken away is that she could have stood up to Craig and persuaded her Mum to also stand up to Craig and tell him that she knew what he did with the dogs that “he said” would go to a good home, and really the dogs (like Alphi), were, well let’s just say in a way put down, and never to be seen again alive. She could have also stopped Craig by telling him how she felt (not that he would really care) and just have been honest with him.

  17. The unwise choices Becky made were…
    • She ran away from home. It’s dangerous because she could get hurt or starve.
    • She hitchhiked. It’s dangerous because she doesn’t know the person who is driving the car, and the guy driving the car could have hurt you or harmed you.
    • She left her bag with her money and blankets on a park bench. This was unwise because someone can take your bag.

Realistic and safer alternatives Becky could have chosen instead of running away to save Brighteyes are she could have talked to Craig. She also could have talked to her mom about it. Becky could have also walked to the city instead of hitchhiking. She also should have brought more money with her so that she doesn’t starve.
Becky could have stopped Craig getting picked up the land rover by talking to Craig about it. If that didn’t work, she could have reported Craig to an animal control person.

  18. It was dangerous for Becky to run away from home at night and hitchhike with a stranger that could have kidnapped her. It was all so not safe to go in the area that had a “No Trespassing” sign or not bring much money, water and food because you could die if you didn’t have any water or food.
Instead of Becky running away she could have told Craig that she knew what happens when dogs get token by the rover and said that she would not let Craig do it to Brighteyes.
She could also stop Craig and the land rover by telling the man in the rover to stop doing what Craig says to him. Jason

    • Try to compromise with Craig.

The things that Becky could have done to stop Craig from letting the dogs get taken by the landrover could have been…
    • Not called the landrover in the first place.
    • Pleaded Craig to let them stay. By Trinity.

  20. Becky has mostly made unwise choices so far in the book that could potentially endanger her life and in some cases Brighteyes life too. For example, when Becky hears the gunshot and then sees Alphie’s dead body being wheeled and dumped in a hole then buried, she decides she is going to run away with Brighteyes because Craig lied to her and her mother and was going to take away Brighteyes soon because he wouldn’t be able to race without Alphie. This is a dangerous situation because now Becky has nowhere to sleep, she has to live on the food and money she has, and now will have to find a job to support herself and Brighteyes. Another bad choice Becky made was hitch hiking her way to a big city near where herself, her mother, and Craig lived. This isn’t safe because she got in a vehicle with a stranger she didn’t know or had any knowledge of or could put her trust in. Becky also didn’t know if the man whom she hitched hiked with would actually take her to her destination or hold her somewhere against her will. Another not so smart choice that Becky made is when her and Brighteyes got to the park and Becky left her rucksack on the bench to play with Brighteyes. Becky was careless about leaving her bag out in the open where someone could take it and in turn her bag, which had all of her spare clothes and belongings in it, was stolen. Another unwise decision was when Becky decided to sleep in a multi-story car park. It may have been warm and dry but she did not think that someone else was sleeping there already, even when Becky saw that in the past people had lived there and there was a lot of garbage and the remains of a fire. Becky was able to sleep in the car park for a bit, but then a homeless man with a very aggressive dog came and Brighteyes and the dog started fighting, ending with Becky’s hand being severely bitten and one of Brighteyes’ ears badly torn. Some safer alternatives that Becky could have took instead of running away with Brighteyes are she could have told her mom the truth about what Craig did to Greyhounds who couldn’t run anymore or she could have asked Craig in front of her mom what he really did to retired dogs and if he didn’t answer to answer for him, telling the truth. Becky could have threatened Craig about going to an animal rescue centre and telling what he did to the dogs or just could just try and talk to him. Jada
