Born To Run: Craig's Side of the Story...

In the book Born To Run, Craig had Alfie "taken away" because he came up lame in a race and would never be able to run competitively again.  Craig has always said that the greyhounds are not pets; they are his working dogs.  Becky was horrified when she saw what actually happened to Alfie and all the previous dogs that could no longer run.  As you know, this caused Becky to run away with Brighteyes.

1. I'm going to ask you to do something hard!  Defend some of Craig's rules: what possible reasons could Craig have for
  • not allowing the dogs in the house
  • not allowing Becky or anyone coddle the dogs
  • not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race
2. What alternatives could Craig have chosen for his dogs, once they can no longer run?

  1. Craig would not let the dogs come inside so that Becky would not get too attached to the dogs when they leave and hurt her feelings. Craig would not let people cuddle dogs because then it would when it is racing go up to people and want to be cuddled instead of racing. Also Craig would not keep the dogs around after they are down racing because he would not have room for the dogs who are still racing and it would take up to much space. He could of put them in a kennel or gave them to over families and not kill them.

    1. Some good points, Ally, especially the one about Craig not wanting the dogs to be coddled in case that interfered with their performance in the races.

  2. 1. Probably he didn’t allow the dog in the house because there was no more space for the dog in the house and thought she would not take care of them.
    2. Probably he didn’t want Becky or anyone else to coddle the dog because he didn’t want her to get use to the dog so if he took him away she wouldn’t be as sad.
    3. Maybe Craig didn’t want them around when they couldn’t race is because maybe he wanted to use the dogs to get money and if they couldn’t run he can’t make money off them.
    4. Craig could have sold the dogs that couldn’t run to another family that wanted a dog or just kept the dog. - Joey

  3. Possible reasons that Craig could have for not allowing any dogs in the house are he does not like the dog’s feet in the house because they are usually dirty, and Craig might not what anybody to pet or play with the dogs because the dogs might get to attached to the person and in the middle of the race see them in the crowd and run up to them and for the last one not keeping any of the dogs after they cannot win anymore is because this is how he makes money and with no money there is no way for him to pay for food and his house or anything.
Other rules that Craig could have for these rules are only having two dogs in the house at a time and only when they are clean, and for not petting the dogs he could have said not petting the dogs as much as you want only a few times and for the last one Craig could have said you can keep the dogs after they can no longer race but you have full responsibility for them.

  4. Not allowing dogs in the house is a good rule because that means that there would be more cleaning. Not coddling the dogs I think is okay because they could have flees maybe. Not letting dogs stay is good because Craig said that greyhounds are not pets they’re racing dogs. Craig could have found the dogs good homes that were no longer able to run or he could have just let the ones he liked stay or maybe he could have put them in the pound or a shelter. Nathan

    1. I like your ideas for Craig to make better choices..."Craig could have found the dogs good homes that were no longer able to run or he could have just let the ones he liked stay or maybe he could have put them in the pound or a shelter."

  5. 1.Well, I agree with some of the rules that Craig made I agree with Craig’s first rule that the dogs are not allowed in the house, because the dogs might have caught flees from the other dogs at the racing tracks, and then if Becky coddles them she might catch flees.

2.When the dogs could no longer run Craig could have kept some that Becky were close to and actually send to dogs to the rescue centre!

    1. What about getting too attached to the dogs? Did Craig know that would cause problems when they couldn't race any more? I wonder if that was a good rule after all?

  6. Craig’s Side of the Story
    • The reason I think why Craig said no dogs in the house is because he might have been allergic because if Craig was allergic he would get stuffed up and not be able to race dogs. Craig didn’t let dogs in the house because he didn’t want any of his family members getting to connected because if Becky or Becky’s Mom got to connected to any of the dogs and they got taken away, so both of them would be very sad and Craig would not like that.
    • I was wondering why Craig did not allow Becky or anyone else to coddle the dogs, and one of the reasons why I was wondering is because Becky would get to connected with them so when the dogs were racing they would get to distracted by Becky in the stands watching them so the dogs would get distracted and lose the race and the way I am defending Craig’s rules is because if Craig knew about any of this Craig would get really mad at Becky and Becky’s Mom and then Craig and Becky’s will get a divorce and then that will cause even more stress in Becky’s life and Becky’s mom life.
    • The reason I think Craig would not allow the dogs to stay at their place until the pass away because if you count every dog that Craig has it would get very crowded in their home and it would cost a lot of money for the whole family to afford it all and since the dogs aren’t racing and Craig is not Gambling the family would not that much money. And the way I am defending is because it would be horrible to let the dogs starve and not get that much exercise.

  7. Rules
Craig’s rule about no dogs in the house was a rule so the dogs didn’t get lazy and not race as well. Craig’s second rule no coddling was meant so in races the dogs wouldn’t come for pets or treats in races. Craig’s third rule not keeping dogs around after they cannot race is because greyhounds are racing dogs not pets. Craig could have actually sent the dogs to good homes.

  9. Craig could have wanted the dogs out of the house because he did not want the dogs to get rambunctious and break items in the house or hurt them .I think that Craig had a good reason to not allow people to cuddle the dogs, because they could have distracted the dogs and get them to want to cuddle all the time and does not want to race. He maybe did not want the dogs because he could not earn money from the dog. Craig could have kept the dogs for the enjoyment of having dogs. ~Amelia

    1. What about if Becky and her mother became attached to the dogs? What would Craig do once the dog no longer won its races?

  10. 1. Possible reasons Craig has for:
    1. Not allowing the dogs in the house, they are working dogs. Why have the things in the house?
    2. Not allowing Becky or anyone coddle the dogs, because that would make them not want to race even more.
    3. Not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race, because who needs working dogs if they don’t work?
    2. Alternatives Craig could have chosen for his dogs, once they can no longer run were actually sending them to the home who might just love them, or take them to the vet, or the pound. Tabatha.

    1. I'm not sure what you mean by "Why have things in the house?'

  11. I think no dogs in the house could be a good rule because the dog could get to comfy in the house so when it’s time to go outside the dogs won’t want to. Also maybe so the dogs don’t wreck any furniture of scratch any floors. Not letting Becky or anybody else coddle with the dogs is a good rule because it could get the dog off its game or make the dog too comfortable with people. Not keeping the dogs after they are not able to race anymore is a good rule because after the dogs are done racing and you keep them it’s a waste of space that could have a newer and faster dog in the others dogs spot. If you keep the dog it’s like having a T.V. that doesn’t work. After the dogs are done racing Craig could take the dog to a rescue center or put the dog up for adoption

    1. So how could Craig have got these ideas over to Becky so that Becky was cooperative?

  12. Craig probably did not let dogs in the house because they are dirty and they would become soft, Craig probably did not let people to coddle the dogs is because they might get soft and would become pets and not racing dogs, Craig probably got rid of the dogs when they could not race so he could get new and faster dogs.
